What Happens in a Drug Test?

Understanding the testing process helps you know your rights and what to expect. Testing can occur in-competition or out-of-competition, with or without advance notice.

1

Notification

A Doping Control Officer (DCO) will notify you that you have been selected for testing. You must report to the Doping Control Station within the specified time.

2

Reporting

You may bring a representative with you. You will be asked to present photo ID and will remain under observation until providing a sample.

3

Sample Collection

You will select a sealed collection kit. For urine samples, you must provide a minimum of 90ml under direct observation. Blood samples are taken by trained personnel.

4

Sample Division

Your sample is split into A and B bottles. You will verify the seal numbers and sign the Doping Control Form.

5

Documentation

You will review and sign the Doping Control Form. You receive a copy for your records. Any irregularities should be noted on the form.

6

Analysis

Samples are sent to a WADA-accredited laboratory. You will be notified of results through your NGB or Sport Ireland.

Dried Blood Spot Testing

Introduced in 2023, Dried Blood Spot (DBS) testing complements existing urine and venous blood collection methods. The process involves collecting a few drops of blood from the fingertip or upper arm using specialised equipment.
